Obstacle races are a regular feature of the annual race calendar. If you are thinking of signing up for your first one, then the Spartan Race Series is a great place to start.
For beginners we recommend the Sprint. Spartan’s shortest courses are 3+ miles and 20+ obstacles. You complete the race at your own pace, however, if you fail an obstacle along the way, you must complete 30 burpees before continuing on.
Ready for more? The Super is 8+ miles, 24+ obstacles, and often hosted on a tougher terrain.
The hardest of the three races is the Beast: 12+ miles and 30+ obstacles. Not for the faint hearted.
There is even a race for kids which are ½ – 1 mile in distance, and have an emphasis on teamwork, fun and getting muddy
Of course, it’s the obstacles that matter most. You can expect rope climbs, tunnel crawls, deep muddy banks, monkey bars, burpees, barbed wire crawl, spear throw, tyre drag, wall climbs, hay bale jumps and many more. There will be obstacles that catch you off-guard too.
Taking on a specifically tailored training plan is a must for this type of event. You will need to have good all-round anatomical strength and, of course, cardio fitness to get you through all those burpees and running between obstacles.
Every entry fee includes a headband, photos, a free beer at the end, a finisher’s shirt and medal.
There is a great teamwork philosophy with these events. Participants help fellow Spartans over obstacles, and if you get a group of friends together to create a team, you’ll have loads of fun training together and finishing together.
Race season has already begun across England and Germany, with some amazing locations in cities and in the countryside
